10 Tips for a Healthy Heart

A diet high in cold water fish, vegetables and antioxidants like vitamin E and CoQ10 combined with regular exercise can do a great deal to keep your heart strong.

  1. Choose fish: Especially cold-water fish such as wild salmon and sardines and herring which contain protective omega-3 fatty acids that improve cardiovascular health.
  2. Get your exercise: Aerobic activity helps maintain heart health. Walking is inexpensive and a great way to stay fit all it takes is a little motivation and a comfortable pair of shoes.
  3. Maintain a healthy weight: Keep trim with a diet low in saturated animal fat and sugar, but high in fibre, fruit and vegetables.
  4. Take vitamin E: Protect your heart with antioxidants such as Vitamin E to boost the cardiovascular system and reduce the risk of serious cardiovascular complaints.
  5. Take CoQ10: Reduce your risk of heart attack with CoQ10 which has good antioxidant and vessel protecting qualities.
  6. Get Smart about Smoking: If you smoke, quit! Smoking is a major risk factor for cardiovascular disease, but that risk can be reduced by stopping smoking at any age.
  7. Drink to your heart: Red wine contains antioxidants and flavonoids associated with heart protection.
  8. A little dark chocolate goes a long way: The darker the chocolate, the more catechins (a heart healthy antioxidant). Indulge in a little (low sugar) dark chocolate for a heart healthy boost
  9. Have a hearty laugh: Look on the light side of things; very few things in life are better than a good laugh and it turns out that laughing heartily is good for the heart.
  10. Manage stress well: Be proactive and address issues as they arise. Try exercise such as yoga, which gives you both a mental and physical lift.
