The body mass index (BMI) is a calculation made by comparing a
person's weight and height to estimate if an individual's weight falls
within a healthy range. Though it does not actually measure the
percentage of body fat, it is a useful tool in providing a rough guide
for desired body weight based on your height.
How does this tool help me?
It's important to remember that your BMI score is not a
be-all, end-all measurement, as BMI doesn't take in to account whether your
weight is from lean muscle mass, or fat. Meaning that you could
potentially lose a great deal of fat and still be classified as
overweight, especially if you're an athlete or bodybuilder. So use BMI
as a starting point, but for true measurements, getting your body fat
percentage tested is the better approach.
